Corona virus: The United States has given notice to the United Nations and Congress to withdraw from the World Health Organization

The United States has given notice to the United Nations and Congress to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). The move by the United States comes at a time when the corona virus has infected more than 2.98 million people and killed more than 131,000. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had made his intentions clear in May. He said the World Health Organization was "under Chinese influence. Despite calls from the European Union and other leaders and institutions to reconsider the decision, he said he would expel his country from the UN body and spend its funds elsewhere.

He has now informed Congress and the United Nations of his decision, but this phase could take up to a year to complete. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's spokesman Stephen Dujarric has confirmed that the United States has announced its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization, effective July 6, 2021.

Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat on the Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote on Twitter: "Congress has received a notification that the President of the United States has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization during the outbreak."

"It will make America sick and America alone," he wrote.
